Overview

About Sapphire FUE

Sapphire FUE follows the same steps as a standard FUE transplant. The difference is the instrument used to open the small recipient channels: a blade with a sapphire tip rather than a steel one.

Sapphire blades are very sharp and smooth, and some surgeons prefer them for making small, precise incisions. Published evidence that they lead to better long-term results than steel blades is limited, so the choice of instrument is best left to the surgeon’s judgement and experience.

Suitability

Who it may be suitable for

  • Pattern hair loss suitable for an FUE transplant
  • Larger areas to cover, such as the mid-scalp or crown
  • A donor area with enough density for the planned grafts
  • Willingness to have the treated areas trimmed short

These are general points only. Whether a treatment is suitable for you is decided by the treating clinician after reviewing your photos, medical history and, where needed, an in-person examination.

The process

How it works

  1. Remote assessment

Photos of your hair loss and donor area allow the surgeon to give a first opinion and graft range.

  2. Planning

The hairline and treatment area are drawn and agreed, and the head is trimmed as planned.

  3. Extraction

Under local anaesthesia, follicular units are removed individually.

  4. Sapphire channel opening

Small channels are opened in the recipient area with sapphire-tipped blades, following the natural growth direction.

  5. Placement and review

Grafts are placed into the channels, and the team reviews the area and carries out the first wash the next day.

Recovery

What recovery usually looks like

  1. Days 1–3

Some tightness, mild swelling around the forehead or eyes and small scabs around the grafts are common. You sleep with your head slightly raised and follow the clinic’s instructions for the first gentle wash, usually the day after the procedure.

  2. Days 7–10

The small crusts soften and come away with careful washing. Redness fades gradually. Many people return to desk-based work in this window, though more physical jobs may need longer.

  3. Weeks 2–8

Most transplanted hairs shed. This is an expected phase: the follicles stay in place beneath the skin and enter a resting period before regrowing.

  4. Months 3–6

New growth usually starts to appear, often fine and uneven at first, then gradually thickening.

  5. Months 12–18

The result is usually assessed at around a year. Density at the crown can take longer to mature than at the hairline.

Timelines vary between people. Always follow the aftercare instructions from your treating clinic.

Good to know

Risks and considerations

  • The donor area is a limited resource. A responsible plan spreads it across your likely needs over the years, not only the area that bothers you most today.
  • A transplant does not stop ongoing hair loss in the surrounding native hair. The surgeon may discuss medical treatment to help protect what you have.
  • Common, usually temporary effects include swelling, tenderness, numbness in the donor or recipient area and small pimple-like spots (folliculitis). Infection and noticeable scarring are uncommon but possible.
  • Growth can be uneven, and some people choose a second, smaller session to refine density. Results vary from person to person and cannot be guaranteed.
  • Smoking, some medicines and certain medical conditions can affect healing. Tell the clinic about your full medical history and current medication before any plan is confirmed.
FAQ

Common questions

Does sapphire FUE heal faster than standard FUE?

Some patients and surgeons report smoother healing, but there is not strong evidence of a meaningful difference. Healing depends far more on overall technique and aftercare.

Should I ask specifically for sapphire FUE?

It is reasonable to ask which instruments the surgeon uses and why. The experience of the team matters more than the blade material.

How long should I plan to stay in Istanbul?

Most graft-based procedures are planned around three nights: arrival and pre-procedure checks, the procedure day, and a review with the first wash before you fly. Your coordinator confirms the exact schedule once the clinic has set the date.

How is the cost decided?

The price depends on the plan the surgeon recommends after reviewing your case, mainly the area to be treated and the technique. You receive a written, itemised quote before anything is booked, with no obligation to proceed.
